My primary research interests are machine-generated content and frictionless information systems. My experiences with News at Seven and the Medill School of Journalism have also left me generally interested in the intersection between computer science and journalism, especially how technology can help create a more informed readership.
Machine-generated content systems autonomously create compelling news content from existing online materials. The main system we've developed in this area--and the bulk of my thesis work--is News at Seven, an automatically generated, customizable news and entertainment show.
Frictionless information systems are designed to painlessly deliver useful information to a user based on their current context. My main work in this area has been with Pivot, an iPhone app that quickly and easily delivers relevant information to real-world shoppers. I have also done some work on Beyond Broadcast, a system that delivers contextually useful information while watching video online.
